On Wednesday 16th August, P & I welcomed new apprentice engineers, Connor Jones and Jay Andrews.
Connor joins us as a service and maintenance apprentice engineer, having completed his Level 3 Extended Diploma in Engineering at South Downs College. In March, Connor met two P & I representatives during a careers fair at South Downs College and decided to apply. Connor will be completing the Level 3 NVQ Extended Diploma in Engineering Maintenance for the duration of his apprenticeship.
Jay joins us as an electrical installation apprentice engineer, having completed a 15-week intensive IT Systems course at Highbury College. Actively seeking an electrical based apprenticeship, Jay heard P & I were advertising for an electrical installation apprentice so decided to apply. Throughout Jay’s apprenticeship he will be studying for his Level 3 NVQ in Electrotechnical Building Services.
Both Connor and Jay will be enrolled with P & I’s apprenticeship partner, PETA. PETA Ltd is a Hampshire-based training organisation set up in 1970 and is owned by over 330 member companies including Portsmouth Water, Stannah Stairlifts, Wightlink, Portsmouth International Port, Kenwood, Airbus, Boeing and many others. Alongside on the job training, Connor and Jay will attend PETA’s Engineering Training Centre located in Havant, where they will undertake the classroom-based part of their apprenticeships.
Gavin Smith, Senior Manager of Government Funded Training at PETA commented:
“PETA is very much looking forward to continuing our successful apprenticeship training venture with P & I, a very active business with the great achievement of giving young people the support to learn and develop in a first-class environment. We wish Jay and Connor the best of luck as they become valued members of their teams and take on key roles in day-to-day activities. PETA is proud to work in partnership with P & I to ensure that their recruiting and training of apprentices runs smoothly – people development is at the core of what PETA does – specialising in helping customers develop their people to make a difference – through open courses, the customisation of programmes that are unique to the client’s organisation, the provision of advisory and consultancy services to provide hands-on support when it’s needed and through cost-effective apprenticeship solutions which enable companies to grow and develop young people to become the leaders of the future.”
Under the leadership of Training & Development Supervisor, Paul Ross, Connor and Jay will receive plenty of support and guidance throughout their time at P & I. Since taking on our first apprentice in 2008, every apprentice has secured a full-time position with P & I after completion of their apprenticeship.
Training & Development Supervisor, Paul Ross commented:
“We strongly believe in investing in the next generation of our workforce, therefore, every year P & I take on new apprentice engineers. Our industry is niche and to be able to grow our own home-grown talent, is vital to our business. I look forward to working with Connor and Jay and watching them both progress. The best part of my job is seeing the apprentices grow and develop with the company. I wish them both every success with P & I.”
From everyone at P & I, we would like to welcome Connor and Jay to the team!
