The Brief
Southern Water, through the CMDP project, required the design and supply of a super silent 1100kVA standby generator.
The generator needed to be housed within a bespoke acoustic container and include an integral fuel tank. The final solution had to meet the operational requirements of the site, including fuel provision, telemetry, cable connection arrangements, load bank testing capability and water board specification requirements.
P&I Group worked closely with CMDP during the design stage to develop a solution that could meet the site’s technical and practical requirements.

The Challange
The project required a large 1100kVA generator to be installed within a specialist pre-fabricated acoustic container.
This created several engineering and logistical challenges. The generator had to be positioned accurately inside the enclosure, with all outlets and connection points aligned to the pre-fabricated container design. This required specialist contract lifts and inch-by-inch skating of the generator into position.
The project also evolved during the design stage. The fuel supply was initially planned to be external to the generator, but the final design incorporated the fuel tank within the container.
To comply with the required water board specification, a new control system also had to be retrofitted once the generator had arrived.

The Soultion
P&I Group supplied a Kohler KD1100 generator within a specialist super silent acoustic container, complete with an integral 2,200-litre fuel tank.
The container was supplied by Technical Acoustic Solutions, with all other works completed directly by P&I Group. The project involved two design engineers during the initial design stage, followed by two weeks of work by two engineers and a subcontractor to fit the engine and alternator into the container.
The completed generator package was delivered to site and crane lifted into position. P&I Group then completed the connection of all mains cables into the specialist cable connection box, installed telemetry provisions and completed final testing and commissioning.
The final installation also included an external load bank test connection point to support future testing and maintenance requirements.

The Result
The project was completed and commissioned around 18 months after the initial order was placed, with the extended timeline largely due to client-side site delays.
P&I Group completed the final on-site works over one week using two electrical engineers. The completed installation provided Southern Water with a bespoke 1100kVA standby generator solution designed around the site’s infrastructure requirements.
The project demonstrated P&I Group’s ability to manage complex generator design, specialist acoustic enclosure requirements, large-scale equipment handling and final commissioning for critical water infrastructure.
