Southern Water required improvements to the backup power monitoring system at one of its water infrastructure sites.

The existing generator controller was providing limited telemetry signals, which reduced visibility for the client’s central control centre. The controller was also not user-friendly and was considered inadequate for the site’s operational requirements.

P&I Group was brought in to upgrade the generator control system, improve telemetry visibility and support more reliable monitoring of the site’s standby power provision.

The site had limited telemetry signals from the existing generator controller, restricting the level of information available to Southern Water’s central control centre.

This created a monitoring gap for the client and made it harder to identify issues remotely. The existing MICS Telys controller was also no longer suitable for the level of control, visibility and usability required on site.

Before the upgrade works began, P&I Group also diagnosed and rectified two additional generator issues. These included a slight leak on the fuel supply line to the injection pump, which was pulling air into the fuel lines, and two batteries with a state of health below 25%.

The challenge was to upgrade the control and telemetry system while also addressing underlying generator faults that could have affected standby power reliability.

P&I Group upgraded the existing MICS Telys controller to a DSE 7310 MKII controller.

To allow the new controller to be fitted into the existing control panel, P&I Group manufactured a custom plate and modified the panel arrangement. Multiple sensors and switches were installed to improve monitoring capability and provide the client with a more complete telemetry signal package.

SWA cabling was also installed to provide suitable protection and mechanical strength. The works were completed in line with current wiring regulations and water industry standards.

In addition to the control system upgrade, P&I Group rectified the fuel supply line issue and replaced the underperforming batteries, improving the overall condition and reliability of the generator set.

The site now benefits from improved backup power resilience and better remote monitoring capability.

The new telemetry signal package gives Southern Water’s central control centre greater visibility of the generator system, supporting quicker awareness of faults and improving confidence in the site’s standby power provision.

The upgrade also improved usability for site teams by replacing the older controller with a more capable DSE 7310 MKII system.
