The Challange

St Mary’s Hospital required a structured maintenance and testing programme for its standby generator estate.

P&I Group was appointed by Isle of Wight NHS Trust to carry out the service, maintenance and load bank testing of twelve generators across the site, twice per year.

The requirement also included the design, build and supply of a 300kVA road tow generator to further support the hospital’s backup power resilience.

As a live healthcare environment, the programme needed to be planned carefully around site operations, with a strong focus on safety, efficiency and minimal disruption.

The Soultion

Hospital backup power systems need to be maintained, tested and ready to perform when required. At St Mary’s Hospital, the scale of the generator estate meant the Trust needed more than a basic service visit.

The key challenge was to complete two full service rounds per year across generators located around the Isle of Wight site, while also carrying out load bank testing in a way that was practical, efficient and carefully coordinated.

The works needed to account for generator access, filter identification, load bank positioning, site movement, hospital operations, key generators requiring weekend attendance and minimal disruption to the Trust.

Before the works began, P&I Group completed initial site visits to assess the generator locations, identify the correct service parts and understand where load banks could be safely positioned.

This allowed our team to map out the most efficient route around the site and plan the works in a way that reduced disruption.

A detailed seven-day programme was created to complete the servicing and load bank testing. The schedule allowed for two load bank tests to be completed each day, with four key generators scheduled for weekend works to reduce disruption to the hospital.

By planning the programme in advance, P&I Group was able to deliver the work in a structured, safe and cost-effective way for the Trust.

The Result

P&I Group completed all generator servicing and load bank testing on time and with minimal disruption to the hospital.

Following the successful delivery of the maintenance programme, P&I Group also supplied a specialist 300kVA road tow generator to support the site.

The contract was initially awarded for one year and was later renewed, reflecting the quality of service delivered and the Trust’s confidence in P&I Group’s ongoing support.
