There are many types of generators out there and understanding how each one works is essential to choosing the right one.
At P&I Generators we have created many different guides on UPS, diesel generators and more. We even have a generator sizing and selection guide you can use to help guide you through which generator is right for you.
However, many of the UPS or diesel generators can be part of complex systems. That is why we have created this handy little guide of simple things you need to know before you buy a generator.
Know what size you need
The first thing you need to do before you buy a generator is to know what size you need. This isn’t only in relation to the physical size of a generator, but also the amps/power of the generator itself. Having a generator is useful, only if it can power what you need it to!
List out the items you intend to use the generator for
Leading on from the first point, make sure you list out the equipment you want to use the generator for (this is a load profile). Knowing this will enable you to work out the kilowatts you need and allow you to purchase a generator that can supply the equipment with the required amount of power.
Consider location
Another thing you should know before purchasing a generator is the location. Look at where you need to use the generator, consider where will the exhaust fumes might go and if the noise when running the generator will be an issue. Having and selecting the right space and area for your generator is key. Good planning here will help ensure the placing of the generator is best for the required purpose, it meets environmental as well as health and safety requirements and that it is easily accessible for servicing and maintenance. Also consider suitable access for refilling the generator safely with fuel.
Look at maintenance and service guidelines
Another important factor to consider when buying a generator is the maintenance and service guidelines. Make sure you understand the operator maintenance you have to carry out on the generator, as well as when it needs to be serviced by professionals.
While a generator is a fantastic option for backup power, it isn't a case of purchase and forget about it. Generators need to be properly maintained in order to perform effectively. Make sure you are prepared to maintain and service the generator as needed, otherwise it may not work effectively and could cause various problems and additional cost for you in the future.
Understanding the use of a generator as well as other factors will ensure you purchase the right equipment.
