Regular checks on your critical power system, whether you have an owned or hire generator, help you avoid costly repairs and ensure it runs when you rely on it most. A clear, step-by-step maintenance routine gives you the confidence that your generator will perform reliably in any situation.
In this maintenance checklist, we'll take you through the daily, weekly and monthly checks you need to do to ensure your generator is always ready to perform. By staying consistent with these checks, you protect your investment and extend your generator lifespan.

1. Check oil level and top up if necessary (daily)
You should check your generator’s oil level before each use or as part of your daily inspection. This helps you spot low levels early and prevent unnecessary wear on the engine.
Use a dipstick to measure the oil level. Remove it, wipe it clean, reinsert it fully then remove it again to read the level. The oil should be between the minimum and maximum marks.
If the oil is low, add the type and grade recommended in your generator’s manual. Pour slowly to avoid overfilling, as too much oil can cause engine problems.
It's also a good idea to check for signs of oil leaks around the engine. Even small leaks can cause the level to drop quickly. If you find a leak, repair it before running the generator.
2. Inspect coolant level and refill as needed (weekly)
Check your generator’s coolant level before each use or at least once a week. This helps prevent overheating and keeps the engine running at a safe temperature. Make sure your generator is switched off and cool before opening the coolant cap.
Look for the “full” and “low” marks on the coolant system reservoir. The engine coolant level should be between these marks. If it is below the minimum level, you'll need to top it up.

3. Examine fuel level and ensure fuel quality (weekly)

You should check the fuel filter and sediment bowl regularly for water or debris. Water in the fuel system can cause poor performance and damage over time.
To drain the sediment bowl, first switch off the generator and close the fuel supply. Place a suitable container under the bowl to catch the fuel and water. Loosen the drain plug or tap until the water and contaminants flow out.
Watch for a change in the liquid from cloudy or clear water to clean fuel. Once only fuel is coming out, close the drain securely. Dispose of the drained liquid safely according to local regulations.
If your system has a water detection sensor, follow the manufacturer’s instructions when it signals to drain. Some diesel generators require draining before water reaches the filter element.
